I have come back to you, my poor neglected livejournal, simply with the realization that people are all the same. No matter what they seem like on the outside, we all have our fears, our havens, basic human instincts. Also, I learned that I can really can find anything I want on the internet.

7:07 pm - You Know What Scares Me Part II
|
My dreams. My dreams scare me. They are incredibly coherant, realistic, and if they are in any way prophetic I will kill myself. Last week I had a horrible dream that is too long to explain. I also dreamt that Veronica and I got into a huge fight and hated each other. 2 nights ago I dreamt that my brother died. Last night I dreamt that I was about to go out with one of the last people on the planet that I would ever go out with. (and i noticed something today that made that quite certain in my mind, so no, it's not some sort of subconcious love, i'm actually conciously and subconciously repulsed by the idea).
I hate these dreams, they make me wake up and feel like i'm someone else. Because they are so believeable that when I wake up I literally have to take a long time to realize that it didn't happen, and sort out my real feelings from the feelings in my dream.
THE ORGAN BROKE UP TODAY. I actually am crushed. And sort of afraid to go to sleep.
Oh my goodness. So i thought "That sounds very familiar, i've said that here before..." and went back in my entries and on December 11, 2005, I also was going through a terrible sleep cycle. This is beyond scary. What is it about December that makes it the month of horrible dreams!?

10:41 am - One Beat
|
( Movie Soundtrack ) I actually had things to say, but I forget what. I love the Dixie Chicks, and I loved Shut up and Sing. Man, 4 solid albums. But besides that, right now I am quite infatuated with Sigur Ros, Bjork and CocoRosie! Still, not what I really had to say. Eh, whatever. Sarah Slean in a week!

1:42 pm - Moratorium on Deep Sea Trawling
|
Finally putting my Livejounral to a good use. So a week ago today, all the marine bio-ers learned a little something about Deep Sea Trawling. I want to pass on this information to everyone. So (for environmental club) I made this little cheat-sheet on what is happening in the world. No I will not LJ cut it because you all need to READ IT and KNOW IT.
MORATORIUM ON DEEP SEA TRAWLING
What is deep sea trawling? • a type of fishing used in deep-sea canyons or rough seafloor • Basically a net with heavy rollers and a mouth that is held open by two steel plate doors is dragged across the seafloor • It is comparable to clear cutting the rainforest or hunting with a bulldozer – pulverizes everything in its path. • Trawlers can bring up an average of 1.6 tons of coral per HOUR • Used to catch only one or two commercial species, yet thousands of tons of coral are hauled up and destroyed, and therefore the habitat of countless organisms disappears. • Globally, the market impact of high seas bottom trawling is tiny; it constituted only a fraction of one percent of the reported total marine fish catch in 2001 by volume and value.
Why is deep sea trawling so alarming? • Many species will either be lost forever or will take years to recover populations • Many deep sea species have not yet been discovered and there is a high risk of extinguishing an entire population before it is even seen.
What would a moratorium do? • A moratorium would put a temporary halt on deep sea trawling until international bodies establish strong, effective management measures for conserving and managing deep-sea fisheries and biodiversity. • It is simply a “time out” until things are sorted out. • In November 2006, at the UN General Assembly meeting, it is hoped that a resolution will be tabled and passed, asking for a temporary prohibition on bottom trawling activity on the high seas (beyond 200 miles)
What does the moratorium mean to Canada? • Economically: It's important that people know that this is a temporary moratorium in unregulated international waters. This means that this is not a ban and this would not occur in Canadian waters or in international waters where any Canadians bottom-trawl. So this moratorium would have absolutely no effect on Canadian fisheries. • Environmentally: Our seas are in ‘deep’ trouble (haha.) From pollution to over-fishing to climate change, there is constant pressure on marine ecosystems. Something needs to be done to change this, and protect our environment.
What is Canada’s position on the support for a moratorium on the high seas? • In May 2006, Fisheries Minister, Loyola Hearn “could not say whether Canada will support a moratorium on deep sea bottom trawling in international waters at the UN talks in June” (he did recognize that trawling impacts both fish habitat and fish stocks.) • On October 6, 2006, Loyola Hearn announced that Canada will not follow other countries in supporting a ban on bottom trawling in the deep seas. In a statement Friday afternoon (the day before we left for marine bio) Hearn said an all-out ban on draggers would not be practical. Yet, see above, it has no effect on our fisheries. • [U.S. President George W. Bush earlier this week instructed his government to oppose fishing practices — such as bottom trawling, also known as dragging — that "destroy the long-term natural productivity of fish stocks or habitats." – What is the world coming to when I’m proud of the States and disappointed in Canada…]
We can do something to change this! Encourage our government to protect the oceans before it’s too late! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you go to http://deepseas.blogspot.com/ you will see a campaign where people have been holding signs showing they support the moratorium. These signs can also be sent to the minister himself at Min@dfo-mpo.gc.ca . Go to the site and you can see the lovely Kenzie and me, and also the people from the Island Odyssey. OSA represent!! It doesn't take long to show your support to this, I highly encourage you to just take a second. It is still possible to change the minister's mind! Environmental club is also doing a letter signing campaign next week, so watch out for that!
THANK YOU AND GOODBYE. PS All of my non-moratorium thoughts and hugs go to Kenzie. <3

My poor fingers are throbbing so much, i've barely been able to put my guitar down in the last 24...48...72 hours. Ah love, over and over... Unfortunately I have small hands, and not-too-impressive tendons so that makes some piano (jazz, like i'm trying to play now) and especially guitar so hard. And now my fingers and joints are paying the price.
So today, i came home and decided it would be fun to bake cookies for the Marine Bio trip. So i did, with help from me mother. It was fun.
And now i have to pack, packing sort of stinks because I always want to take everything, but im a good stuff/sorter so i usually can fit a lot. HowEVER, im lucky that i read the supply list because I did not know we needed a sleeping bag. But I caught it. However, if there anything else i might forget, please let me know.
So until 6 days.

8:53 pm - Happy Talk Like A Pirate Day!
|
It is my duty to inform everyone who hasn't noticed of the PIRATE MOTIF OF LIVEJOURNAL TODAY, IN HONOR OF TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY (you'll notice that 'friends' are not 'mateys', and the little man icon is wearing an eyepatch, and instead of update, it is update captains log). Let me know of any more sneaky things you find!!! Livejournal is very, very cool.
Today Kenzie and I celebrated talk like a pirate day by spending about 30 seconds talking like pirates in math.
Also, today is Tegan and Sara's birthday! (It should be a national holiday). Happy birthday Tegan and Sara!!

How could you NOT repost something so clever?!
1) Being gay is not natural. Real Americans always reject unnatural things like eyeglasses, polyester, and air conditioning. 2) Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people will make you tall. 3) Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract. 4) Straight marriage has been around a long time and hasn't changed at all; women are still property, blacks still can't marry whites, and divorce is still illegal. 5) Straight marriage will be less meaningful if gay marriage were allowed; the sanctity of Brittany Spears' 55-hour just-for-fun marriage would be destroyed 6) Straight marriages are valid because they produce children. Gay couples, infertile couples, and old people shouldn't be allowed to marry because our orphanages aren't full yet, and the world needs more children. 7) Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children. 8 ) Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are imposed on the entire country. That's why we have only one religion in America. 9) Children can never succeed without a male and a female role model at home. That's why we as a society expressly forbid single parents to raise children. 10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society; we could never adapt to new social norms. Just like we haven't adapted to cars, the service-sector economy, or longer life spans.
#2 and #7 are my favorites.

4:50 pm - If i don't write it down then i'll forget it and never remember this summer
|
I think I've finally gotten rid of my sleep depravation. Let me be quite frank with you - summer rocks, this weather rocks, evening activities rock, the community I work in rocks, and my job ... well it DEFINATELY has its hard moments, but it still ROCKS and the good totally outweighs the bad!!
Eg. Friday is our short day. Friday was also like 3000000 degrees outside. Our COMMUNITY LEAGUE, which rocks, donated a $300 some self inflatable water slide (9 ft high 19 ft long -- which includes both the climb up part and slide down part) for us to use so for 4 blissful hours we just slid down again, and again, and again, and at any time i was getting remotely dry the kids would run over and drench me again. I tanned so much on Friday! It was such a sweet day! Not to mention our fun awesome Mexican themed win-the-sandcastle-competition-and-win-a-leader-award-break-open-the-pinata-that-we-made-at-the-park inservice!!
Oh but anyways, for the reason I was posting in the first place -- JURASSIC PARK. Outdoor theater. JULIA GROCHOWSKI THIS IS FOR YOU, YOU CAN NO LONGER BE ANTISOCIAL AND YOU MUST COME OUT TO THIS, IF I DON'T SEE YOU IN THE SUMMER I'LL NEVER SEE YOU EVER AGAIN. Lauren, anyone else who is interested, you must also be free too since it's a weekend. Don't know when yet though. Good, details to follow, i just don't know if you farts ever check your e-mails.

It's very strange when you mean way more to someone than you know. Sort of a "Whoa, ME?! That's out of nowhere, because I definately don't care that much" which leads you to feel very awkward.
Maybe when you find out, you wish you'd have acted differently. Not me, I know emotional awkwardness when I feel it, and I am way past putting myself through that again, thanks. Unintentionally caused maybe, but there's one road to my emotional trauma (a deep fear) and that was it and it could not escalate.
